SutureHQ Lives, Breathes, Eats, Dances Naked.

Mon Dec 7, 2009, 1:24 PM
The beautiful, urbane, and sophisticated scalawags of *suture have created a monster mishmash we like to call a Frankula. It's got fangs, neck bolts, and a head with four corners. Now all we need to do is figure out how to make it work.

We named it #SutureHQ in the hopes that it will make something of its life. We assume the HQ stands for Homonym Quotient because if we say it means High Quality we might again face the wrath of the defenders of the hoi polloi. If anyone asks, just tell them it means headquarters and we'll avoid all the flip-flap.

There's a button somewhere on the facade that allows you to join the group. Please click it and then brag to your friends about the experience. Tell them it was orgasmic and more fulfilling than any other button you've ever pushed. Tell them your life is better, food tastes tastier, the air is greener, the grass is bluer, and the hotties won't stop pounding on your door.

Live workshops will begin sometime in January. There will be a twist to the format. Stay tuned.

Eh? What? Speak up!

Hello kiddies! Grandpa Steve finally got enough Geritol in him to summon the strength to shoo the cats off his lap, grab his ear trumpet, and toddle over to the window. 'Course, can't see a damned thing past the end of my nose. Are you kids still on my lawn?

Audrey has expressed interest in the return of the live workshops. I checked and the Suture chat room is still there. Several roaches and coyotes had taken up residence but I charged them, swinging my cane, and wafting my old-man smell at them. The ones that didn't pass out turned tail and skedaddled. A couple of coats of paint and a new tap for the keg and the place will be right as rain.

Is anyone else interested in such a thing? Workshopping, that is?

Oh yeah, and thanks to Toni and Fiona for getting this mess unstuck!

UPDATE:
Not getting a tremendous amount of feedback on the Poll question. Got 26 votes for "Resume regular service" and 5 votes for "mix it up." If we resume regular service, that'll mean drafting some people on board and hoisting the sails. Doesn't seem like a prudent move with the Xmas holidays barreling down on us - should probably wait until January to get things going.

Who wants the clamber up on deck and grab a rope?

Those who voted "mix it up," what does that mean, exactly? Emiliano suggests we change the look of the place. We can do that. But as for really mixing it up, any ideas from anyone? What would you like to see?

UPDATE:

We are awaiting some exciting and mysterious new development before we release our next issue of Suture. It looks like the news-article-release is a dead issue, but something else is looming on the horizon, category-wise. Hang tight.

The Results Are In

The apps came in slowly at first and I became, again, alarmed at the passivity on this site, but my alarm was premature (as usual) and we received a whopping pile of applications as the deadline approached. No one who applied for a position was unqualified and that led us into the land of Tough Decisions. After carefully considering all the applicants, and a bit of hemming and hawing, we decided to bring on board a mixture of former Staff and new faces.

Welcome aboard to the following new Staff:

*TheWritt
=kaujot
*Fluid-Motion
=apocathary
*zphoenixdownz
*KampfVerein

~aaaaaaaahhhh has been given the task of kickstarting our dormant Serial program.

=sumants will be special agent in charge of insidious bits of tomfoolery.

To those who applied but didn't get selected, aside from our thanks (which is most sincere) we have this to say: your applications are still on file. History has taught us that some organizational turnover can be expected - real life issues such as school, work, lack of work, marriage, babies, hemorrhoids, Lou Gehrig's Disease, termite infestation, mental breakdown, hurricanes and the like can take precedence over an internet ezine (and rightly so), and we may come calling for your services. In fact, all Staff are temporary - we will try to retain a Staff for three releases (over the course of a calendar year) and then bring six new people on board. We want to get as many people involved as we can. But don't let that stop you from helping in the meantime.

Last time we started this thing up we made it clear that recommendations for features were welcome and encouraged. In somewhere in the vicinity of two years no one took us up on that. Honest to God. But the offer still stands. If you come across a piece of writing that tickles your fancy, send us a note and let us know about it. Since we are limiting ourselves to a smaller staff than last time, we'll need the help of DA Lit more than ever. And this time we are going a step further. Not only are we encouraging recommendations, we are asking for submissions. If you write a piece of prose, poetry, essay, or article that you think is bitchin', submit it to us (by providing a link and asking us to consider it). If we like it and include it in our next release, you get to tack us on to the ever-growing list of publications in which your work has appeared. Ain't nothing wrong with that, is there?

So thanks to everyone who applied and to those of you who look forward to our offerings. If you have been selected to be on Staff, a note should be appearing in your inbox soon with some instructions (if it hasn't appeared already). Cool? Now let's get to work, shall we?

I've been busy updating the Submission Calendar. For those of you not in the know, the calendar in the Suture Journal denotes submission periods for various literary journals and reviews. All it costs you to submit to a literary journal is an envelope and a stamp, so there's really no excuse for not doing it. Unless you are afraid of rejection letters or something, but who knows? You might have your poem or work of fiction accepted and then you are on your way.

To use the calendar, just change the date and click go. I have dates coded with little bullets. Here's the legend:

:bulletred: - one literary journal begins submission period on this date
:bulletblue: - multiple literary journals begin submission period on this date

Many literary reviews have similar (or the same) submission periods - for instance, you'll find a lot of them start on September 1. Click here to see the listing for that date: [link]

Information about each journal/review:

* Link to the submission guidelines
* Submission period
* Submission type: prose, poetry, plays, essays, interviews, etc.
* Submission fee (hint - I'll never list a review that charges. They are all free)
* Simultaneous submissions - yes, no, or unspecified

This is a work in progress. I have several hundred to add, but there should be enough to get you started in there now.
